  • Competition Report
    May 2015
    Winter Postal League
The results of the winter postal leagues are now available. We entered teams into competitions run by two organisations. The Surrey County postal league was a Frostbite round (3 dozen 30m on 80cm face) with a Warwick round (2 dozen 60 yrds & 2 dozen @ 50 yrds) for longbows. The BA league ran both Frostbite and indoor Portsmouth competitions. Each league is sub-divided into divisions of 6 teams based on estimated scores and run on a round robin format with points given for each monthly round.
    The results are: -
    • BA Portsmouth – Recurve division 31 – 2nd place with monthly top scores awarded to Justin twice.
    • BA Portsmouth – Recurve division 45 – 4th place with a monthly top score awarded to Barbara W in November
    • BA Portsmouth – Junior recurve division 1 – 6th place – mostly due to lack of scores to enter
    • BA Portsmouth – Compound division 17 – 6th place – mostly due to lack of scores to enter
    • BA Frostbite – Recurve division 23 – 2nd place with monthly top scores awarded to Barbara L three times and to Justin once.
    • BA Frostbite – Junior division 1 – 3rd place
    • Surrey Frostbite – Recurve division 3 – 5th place
    • Surrey Frostbite – Recurve division 6 – 2nd place
    • Surrey Frostbite – Junior division 1 – 1st place
    • Surrey Frostbite – Junior division 2 – 3rd place
    • Surrey Frostbite – Compound division 2 – 5th place
    • Surrey Warwick – Longbow division 3 – 1st place
    AWAY SHOOTS
The summer season has started well with representatives of RRAC at 10 shoots so far this season coming away with prizes from all of them!
The season started with the Spelthorne Special on Easter Monday, an unofficial round of 70 & 45 yards with hidden scores on each target so everyone has a chance to win. Of the eight RRAC members taking part prizes of Easter Eggs were won by Alan C, Kyla-Mae & Barbara L. Eleanor & Kyla-Mae tied 1st on exactly the same score, hits & golds on the junior round.
The first proper competition was at Crystal Palace, a York / Hereford / Bristols round. Seven of RRAC took part with Eleanor & Kyla-Mae both taking silver medals. A good start early in the season.
The next weekend at Andover saw Marshall & Eleanor come away with bronze medals for York & Bristol rounds..
The Surrey Spring Longbow shoot, a 2-way Western round in early May was well supported with ten of our club participating. Sabina came away with a 1st place (actually a silver medal as Longbows like to do things differently!). The team of Marshall, Sabina & Steve took the club team award.

The following day, Marshall, Eleanor & Kyla-Mae came away with more gold medals at West Windsors shoot.
Back at Andover the next weekend, four of the club tried their hand at WA1440 rounds and resulted in two bronze medals for Sabina & Marshall.
SCAM (Southern Counties Archery Meeting) takes place mid-week in the lovely surroundings in Winchester. On Tuesday there was a longbow day with 3 club members taking part. On Wednesday & Thursday there is a double York / Hereford round. Wednesday was a lovely warm, calm day but on Thursday the heavy rain affected the targets so badly the day was abandoned at lunch-time after completing only 4 dozen. Friday is a Long National Round handicapped on the previous 2 days score. A rather ‘old fashioned’ shoot with paperwork dealt with by post and the highlight – mid-morning & mid-afternoon tea trays for each target, complete with china cups & saucers, pots of tea, coffee, sugar & biscuits and flasks of hot water! Barbara L successfully collected a 5th place brooch, a trophy for the best 60yrd score, the County team trophy and 10th place prize (beer and a dole mug) for the handicap day.
At Wilford in Nottingham, Eleanor took the best junior lady prize.
Over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend RRAC descended on-mass to the Middlesex County Champs with a grand total of 17 people participating on one or both days. Eleanor, Imogen B & Oliver won gold medals as junior visitors on Sunday. Team awards were won by the junior team of Eleanor, Kyla-Mae & Lara and longbow team of Sabina & Andrew. On Monday Oliver took Gold, Eleanor Silver & Marshall 4th place for which they receive commemorative spoons.
The final competition in May was Brighton Bowman double WA70m round where 5 members battled very windy & on Sunday wet weather followed by a Head to Head round for which Barbara W won 2nd prize.

  • Royal Richmond have again been making their mark at recent away shoots.

Crowthorne double National competition was held at the end of July and well supported by eight RRAC members, although sadly several people also dropped out at short notice. Although this is a record status shoot it is quite relaxed and very welcoming to novices, the full range of distances is available and no-one looks down on those archers who are most comfortable at shorter distances.
The weather was fine, quite hot at times but with a bit of a breeze.
Competition was fierce especially in the ladies recurve section when the two Barbara’s were divided by just one point!
At the end of the day we came away with four golds for Sarah, Kyla-Mae, Matt & Lizzie and a silver for Barbara L.

On the 17th August we were invited for a friendly match with Spelthorne at their Lakeside ground. Eight members of RRAC took part against 14 of Spelthorne, shooting a St George, Albion or Windsor round.
We had a full range of weather; sun, wind and a heavy shower, fortunately at lunchtime when we treated to a buffet huddled in the club house and gazebos.
The results were worked on a handicap basis so that teams did not need to be matched, taking the top 6 from each club. Spelthorne won overall but there was good shooting from Royal Richmond with several PB’s during the day. We will invite Spelthorne to visit us next year and hope that more people will take part. For a handicap shoot our newer members have a better chance of winning than the old-hands, so please do come and join in!

August Bank Holiday Monday saw ten hardy members at Guildford’s Acorn shoot on a VERY wet day with persistent rain all day. Fortunately it wasn’t cold or windy but by the end of the day there was a lot of very wet kit, tents and people to dry out. At the start of the shoot we were instructed that our priority was to keep the score sheets dry – not an easy task!
Guildford were celebrating 60 years of the acorn shoot with a hog roast at lunchtime in place of the usual BBQ and all archers presented with a hand-turned wooden acorn.
The company was good and although there were a few archers dropping out during the day Royal Richmond persisted and were rewarded with 2 golds for Eleanor & Lara, a silver for Barbara L and the 2nd placed team trophy for Justin, Nick, Barbara L & Barbara W.
Have a look at Guildford’s website for a report and photos of the day http://www.guildfordarcheryclub.co.uk/

  • The American Handicap Shoot took place on Sunday 3.8.2014 under challenging conditions. The weather was lovely and warm but there was a very strong and variable wind throughout the day. Nevertheless the 13 archers taking part enjoyed themselves and at the end of the day the winners were as follows:

    1. Pat Swales

    2. Steve Patterson

    3. Justin Wells

  • Tournament Secretary Barbara Littlechild reports on the Surrey County Championships

RRAC team at the Surrey County Championships

    Surrey County Championships
This two day competition is a double WA1440 round incorporating the English Archery Federation competition on the Saturday and then the Surrey County Championships on the Sunday with the addition of Metric rounds on the Sunday for the juniors and double rounds for the two days.
WA1440 round is 3 dozen arrows at each of 90m & 70m for men & 70m & 60m for ladies then 50m & 30 for all with 10 zone scoring and shot in timed ends controlled by lights. The two shorter distances of 50m & 30m are shot on a 80cm face but at Surrey the compound & recurve archers are given a 6 ring face i.e. no black or white rings. This means that we shoot with just 2 people per face so can shoot 6 arrows per end which is quicker but has the potential to drop several points which might have been 3’s or 4’s.

Saturday dawned clear, calm and warm with the temperature rising to 31 degrees by the afternoon.
Five members of Royal Richmond took part and ended the day with Sabina crowned as the ‘Champion of England’ Ladies Longbow and Barbara L the Ladies Masters Champion with a large trophy to prove it and Barbara W came 3rd.

On Sunday we were joined by two juniors and Sarah was helping with the scoring. The day started with a little drizzle, a relief as we’d been forecast rain but by the afternoon both the temperature and wind had picked up to make it a little more challenging.
Overall RRAC did very well ……
Sabina – 1st Surrey longbow, 1st double, 2nd Surrey longbow pairs
Andrew – 2nd Surrey longbow pairs
Barbara L – 2nd Surrey Masters ladies recurve
Matt – 3rd Surrey under 18 recurve boys, 2nd junior recurve pairs
    Lucas – 1st Surrey under 16 boys
Eleanor – 1st Surrey under 14 girls, 2nd junior recurve pairs
    Sarah got a t-shirt!

  • Results from the Eric Harvey Shoot

Radhika wins the Eric Harvey Cup.

We had a great day shooting at the Eric Harvey Handicap Trophy Shoot on Sunday 20th July. 21 Archers shot Nationals of various length and with various bow types. However, everybody has the same chance of winning as the results are calculated using the current handicap of the archers for their respective bow types. All the archers have to do is shoot to their best level (easily said).

Eric Harvey, who is a long time member and great benefactor to the club (and he also sponsors the lovely trophy) attended the shoot with his wife and daughter. He presented the trophy to this year’s winner, Radhika Chadwick. She shot a spectacular new PB of 498 points for a Junior National, which will drop her handicap by 4 points! She joined the club with her family as a beginner in October last year. Congratulations to her! Click Eric Harvey Shoot Results 2014 for the full results.

  • We shot the Richmond Round on Sunday 29.6.2014 in mostly good weather, little wind and only a few sprinkles of rain. It was enjoyed by all – particularly the tea break with lovely Lemon Drizzle cake kindly provided by Lucas Holt’s mum. The winner of the Hung Trophy is Alistair Adie, shooting his Traditional Bow, followed by Matt Fan and Barbara Littlechild. Full results for the Richmond Round 2014 . The trophy and medals will be awarded at our Club Dinner.

Congratulations to the winners and well done to everybody!

  • Royal Richmond Archers have been out and about winning trophies at various shoots, read all about it here.

  • Away Shoots

The outdoor season has started with the early away shoots. On Easter Monday, on an unusually calm & dry day ten members went to Spelthorne to compete in the ‘Spelthorne Special’ – odd distances of 70 & 45 yards and with hidden scores on the targets so everyone is in with a chance (or not!). Royal Richmond did exceptionally well, coming away with 5 of the hidden score prizes and a ‘best gold’ – all chocolate Easter eggs.

Last Sunday, Royal Richmond was represented at two shoots. At Crystal Palace it was dry and bright with just a little wind and rain right at the end. Sadly no prizes but Barbara W gained a black (900) Rose Award. A well organised and enjoyable shoot. In Andover, it was VERY wet but despite the dreadful conditions Sabina won the Ladies Longbow and gained her first Master Bowman score of the season.
