A wet and windy end to the 2011 outdoor season, but all three championships were finally shot. Trophies and medals for these as well as for shoots completed during the season will be presented at the Club Supper on November 4th. Make sure you have the date booked and keep an eye on your email for more details.

Our final event is on Saturday 17th, when we’ll be shooting a French themed round. Instinctive shooting and novel scoring. Kudos for costume and accent. Even more kudos for actually speaking recognisable French…except Fanny of course, who gets extra kyudo for BEING French. (If that looks like a typo, ask Ms Badia what I mean).

Don’t forget too that the club AGM is on Wednesday 14th in the pavilion. 7.30 for drinks and nibbles, meeting starts at 8.00 sharp.

The club’s championship season is underway…sort of.

The Longbow event took place on August 13th, and while it wasn’t as well attended as had been hoped, it was a good day of archery nonetheless.

The Traditional bow championships wasn’t as lucky, with adverse weather forcing a postponement. It will now be shot on Saturday 10th September, and will be a Short Western round.

The Recurve champs will be held on 4th September. Rounds will be York, Hereford (all day events) and a limited choice of National rounds (1/2 day events). If you haven’t already let Justin Wells know what you plan to shoot can you please do so as soon as possible.

On the 17th September we’ll be celebrating all things French, with Fanny Badia hosting a French themed shoot. Details will be circulated, but keep the date free. Knowing Fanny, there may well be food involved!

A few things going on at Royal Richmond over the next few days and weeks:

Friday 5th August. Party and Hog Roast. The tennis, cricket and archery clubs are getting together for a party, and you’re invited! Cost is £20, and if you get there for 7.30 that’ll include a free drink as well as your delicious piggy (or vegetarian) treat, complete with a selection of salads. Strawberries and cream will finish it all off, then it’s over to the DJ who will keep it all going until around 1.00am. Booking forms are available at the bar, or email lynda.fisher@lighthousegroup.plc.uk to reserve your place.

Sunday 14th August: Many roads around the club will be closed or have severely restricted access due to a cycle race on the route of the Olympic road race. It’s therefore been decided to change the schedule to an afternoon session only. This will start at 1.00 sharp, so please arrive by 12.30.

Saturday 13th August: The first of the club champs: The Longbow Championship, is scheduled for Saturday 13th August. It’ll be a two-way Western. Please let Justin Wells know if you are planning on competing.

Two event coming up on the Royal Richmond calendar:

July 24th. Neighbouring club Spelthorne will be visiting for a friendly match. We’ll be shooting Windsor, Albion & St George rounds, and we need to have a decent turnout as even though it’s a friendly…we want to WIN! Pride is at stake here! Shooting starts at 11.00, so be there for 10.30 in order to help set up and to get your kit ready. There’ll be a barbeque after the event, so plan on staying after shooting.

July 31st. The second Beginners’ Mixer Fun Shoot – allowing those who have completed the beginners’ course to meet the members. Shooting will be followed by a Pot Luck meal. Bring something along for sharing.

Great weather for archery this weekend, and we made the most of it! Saturday saw the annual Victorian Longbow Shoot, with a really fine turnout, both in numbers and in costume!

It was particularly good to be able to welcome a few longbow archers from other clubs, who also entered into the spirit of the event by wearing some fine looking Victorian garb – we were especially taken by Tom Firth’s natty plaid plus-fours!

Fantastic food, and plenty of it was a large part of the attraction of the day, and particular thanks to Barbara and Laura for their work behind the scenes to make that aspect of the day so special for everyone.

Marshall’s Mum came to watch, and we had some distinguished visitors from the cast of Ronin – the film on which Marshall has been working over the past few months.

Sunday was another fine day weatherwise, and a morning of Nationals gave way to a fun shoot in the afternoon, which gave some of the folk who have just completed their beginners’ courses a chance to meet and mix with the club’s members. More food on hand, (thanks to all who brought something) and a VERY welcome ice-cream courtesy of Mark Swaddle, who made a run to the local Sainsbury’s to buy what appears to have been their entire stock.

Photographs of the Victorian shoot can be found on our Flickr page. Copy and paste this into your browser: http://www.flickr.com/photos/48864252@N02/

As we enter June, and the shooting diary fills up our junior section continues to shine! Jesse Zeidaks, Asija Zeidaks and Matt Savage in particular continue to improve under the guidance of Tom Firth and regularly bring home hardware from shoots around the South East. Asija has posted some great results. At one recent shoot she took gold in her age group, shot the best junior score overall (taking in all age groups up to under-18), gained gold in the team event (which the team won by over 200 points) AND shot a six-gold end! Pretty much a clean sweep for Asija!

On the subject of six-gold ends, congratulations go to Matt Savage, who shot just that at Spelthorne on Sunday 5th. Well done Matt, and indeed all our junior representatives, who really are showing the senior club how it should be done!

A newsletter should arrive in your mailbox any time now to advise you of a change to the schedule for Sunday 12th June. The Eric Harvey Trophy has been postponed to allow those members booked to shoot at Windsor on Sunday to take part. Instead there will be a Western round with shooting commencing at 12.00. Get there early to sort out your gear and help with the field.
